The Golden Gate Recreation Area is the largest urban national park and contains the Marin Headlands; and across the bridge, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island and the Presidio.  Sausalito's back yard is a great place for sightseeing and outdoor recreation.  

Muir Woods National Monument is a short distance from Sausalito and well worth the trip.  Beautiful coastal redwood forest with lush green, undergrowth lie in this protected area surrounded by Mt. Tamalpais Park.  The Muir Woods has a variety of trails, including the popular Redwood Canyon, but picnicking and biking are not allowed in the park, and dogs and smoking are not allowed on the trails.  If you find yourself in San Francisco without a car, the 5 hour Muir Woods and Sausalito Sightseeing Tour  features all of the scenic areas you won't want to miss.

Angel Island Immigration Station was the entry point for more than a million immigrants between 1910 and 1930.  Visit the museum in the old barracks and a dormitory recreation area.  Rare opportunity to realize the experience of early citizens.  The museum is open on weekends in the summer.

Bay Model Visitor Center houses a working hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento River Delta.

Bay Area Discovery Museum is a must for those with small children or those seeking to rouse their imaginations.  Six buildings filled with activities for children including an underwater sea tunnel, 45 mazes, art room, media center, and so much more.   Located at historic Fort Baker in the Golden Gate Recreation Area.  Varying schedule.  Take the last exit before crossing the bridge and follow the signs.

Agate Beach Park Near Bolinas on the Pacific coast with nearly two miles of beach and tide pools to explore.

San Francisco Bay Trail or take a guided bike trip over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, and return by ferryboat if desired.
